In the midst of the controversy surrounding the sudden cancellation by KBS of JYJ’s scheduled appearance at the special broadcast event for the promotion of the New 7 Wonders of the Natural World, Radio21’s broadcast, ‘Lee Ki Ho’s Free Scope’ attracted attention via his piercing analysis of the situation.
The day’s programme started off with an interview of Kim Ki Tae, a reporter who has closely followed and covered the JYJ case, wherein reporter Kim noted, “JYJ has sung the theme song for the New 7 Wonders and participated in the filming of short broadcasts in order to encourage both domestic and foreign fans to vote; they didn’t hold back and were completely sincere in the promotional project,” and “not even a day after these clips were put up on blogs or on Twitter, they had garnered an impressive number of views.”
He continued, “Since Jeju Island is not as well known as its competitors on the international stage, the votes from foreigners were very low,” so “through JYJ’s promotional activities Jeju Island gained more momentum in a very short amount of time in Korea, and thanks to JYJ’s influence even foreign fans cast their votes in droves for Jeju, helping its rise in status.
Reporter Kim then said, “Fans argue that the organisers used JYJ’s popularity in order to amass votes for the New 7 Wonders, only to dump them at the last minute before the scheduled concert appearance,” before proceeding to introduce the movement among fans to boycott KBS and refuse to pay the broadcast tax, saying, “It’s not only KBS but the entire media structure of Korea that has become an international laughing stock in the blink of an eye,” as a brief criticism.
On the topic of KBS Jeju’s explanation that “Girls’ Generation and F(x) are more effective” he responded, “even if one accepts that it is the exclusive right of the producers and the broadcasters to make the final decision on the casting of a programme or production, there is such a thing as common courtesy,” and “to cancel out of the blue the scheduled appearance of a ‘PR representative’ without any fair warning is to transgress the realm of tyranny and enter the territory of criminal violence.
It is precisely in this situation that the term ‘G.G.G No JYJ’ came to be.
When the presenter Lee Ki Ho asked “what is the meaning of G.G.G No JYJ” reporter Kim replied, “Grab Girls’ Generation, lose JYJ” and is synonymous with “committing foolish acts, breaking faith and losing sight of what is really important for the sake of shortsighted and immediate interests,” an answer which elicited sounds of agreement from listeners.
On the phenomenon of SM artists replacing JYJ whenever JYJ’s appearances get cancelled, reporter Kim commented, “[because of this] people now jokingly say, JYJ flies, SM falls” giving a compelling reason for the motivation behind the ‘external pressure’ claim floating around the media world and gathering attention for it.
In the latter half of the interview, reporter Kim said, “with the opening of this new era the competition between broadcasters to ‘attract by using stars’ will get more and more severe” meaning “the probability that entertainment companies’ influence will grow is high, and the practice of broadcasters adjusting to the desires of the entertainment companies could become more common,” and “so the important thing is that the Korean public and citizens, as well influential political figures, take notice of the unfair and unjust practices occurring within the entertainment world and get concerned enough that they put in an effort to reform it.
The presenter of the show, reporter Lee, wrapped up the programme with the closing statement, “although I’ve already said this, we are not giving special treatment to JYJ or blindly defending them or their position no matter what, but it is our opinion that those around us who are fighting against being sacrificed to invisible forces of injustice in an abnormal and unfair environment, whether they be celebrities or laborers or politicians, deserver to have their voices heard.
Reporter Lee then recalled the message left on Twitter by a foreigner: “Korea’s broadcasting institutions still are not able to open their hearts and that is regrettable; don’t they know that everything the JYJ does is for the good of Korea?” and “there are more people following their case, supporting them and cheering them on than even the members of JYJ are aware of,” leaving a strong message of encouragement.
