Yesterday all the amusement parks were in Seoul were being crowded because of the news of the Protect the Boss filming. It was very hot and even though my personal condition was not very good, I decided to join to see the outdoors filming.
It is a strange location for filming, but there was a great number of television and newspaper reporters gathered there, so therefore I was able to find the location. However, amusement parks? How many people would be able to guess that we could see Jaejoong and Ji Sung there!
“A great number of people were able to find me!”
It is quite ignorant to think in that way, however the staff really could not figure out a reason for the large crowd [of fans]. It is because fans kept calling each other, until there were so many it must have been difficult to shoot.
Once I arrived, I saw that the filming was being carried out in a very narrow space. The shooting had been going on for a while and the staff was very tired, as could be seen plainly on their faces. In addition, we were in the middle of the bustling staff, who was trying to move from one location to the next.
A heat wave warning had been issued that day by the weather advisories, and combined with the narrow space, the heat became scorching, causing a rather serious atmosphere. Without knowing we all kept repeating “Ah the heat! We should just go home!” But I couldn’t go home then because after every time I pressed down the shutter button, good pictures kept coming!
Even the situation was very good for me. Because of the filming camera and lightening crew that was around the actors I was able to take good pictures. So thank you to those reporters and staff who were filming the actors for helping me (even if it was unintentional).
Because of the harsh conditions, after 30 minutes passed, I could see some frustrations. Also I noticed that they kept filming the same scene over and over again.
“Ah, my makeup is going to melt away”
“It will be messed up, has it not already been messed up?”
[T/N: referring to conversations fans were having with each other]
Wang JiHye and Ji Sung already seemed to be on their tenth shot. The four of them [T/N: the 4 main actors/actresses] gathered in front of the camera and then they had some close up shots with Ji Sung. All of them looked quite fatigued because of the hot July weather.
The actresses Wan Ji Hye and Choi Kange Hee’s feet were hurting because of their high heels, and Jisung and Jaejoong had to sit several times to rest their legs. The shoots were also stopped often because the sound recordists kept picking up sounds from the nearby rides. The need to repeatedly reshoot good scenes in this hot weather because of this reason made me very irritable and tired.
However, the actors themselves did not seem to get angry or annoyed. They spoke each word with soft smiles. The staff asked them to converse [for the cameras] and their conversation went back and forth comfortably.
Whenever the recording was paused, the coordis would come out to retouch hair and makeup so that [the actors] looked their best in every scene. Also the field staff of about 3-4 people, would come in and move the heavy HD cameras or re-install the lighting.
Always, but particularly when it is an outdoor scene like this, I am truly impressed by the staff who silently and faithfully do their job in order to make the actors look the best so that we enjoy watching their shows.
I know that normally filming on set is a lot of trouble, but filming on an outdoor set much be much more trouble! You would have to be blind not to see the sweat and passion on all the members of the crew!
And thus, I realized that the glamour of dramas really was in no way true. Moving camera and lights, which were often every heavy, required much work and effort.
More than anything else, however, I could see the passion in [the staffs'] eyes. The best way to describe it would be like the worship of a priest…and the actors seemed even more sincere than that.
Protect the Boss is scheduled to air every Wednesday and Thursday starting from August 3rd. With the other broadcast at that time, the various broadcasting stations’ competition, it cannot help to compare them. But there can be only one victory, which is to dominate the others!
Each drama and staff, from even before airing, claim to have the best actors and the best publicity staffs. But no matter who really has the best elements, examining past successful works lets us know that ‘no prediction is every completely correct’.
Indeed all the fortune is left up to luck? Perhaps the main reason I am expecting not to be disappointed is that Jisung, Kim Jaejoong, Choi Kang Hee, Wang JiHye, and their staff all work unexpectedly well together.
This should be considered the best reward [T/N: referring to seeing them act so closely with each other]. We were going to ask Wang JiHye, Choi Kang Hee, Kim Jaejoong, and Jisung for exclusive photos. However, in the middle of their hard filming, when they finally came to have a moment of rest, we could not bring ourselves to take away their peace. So I satisfied myself with shooting them as they were, even if it meant getting rear or side profile photos.
However, I found out that profile and back views were the most beautiful in the world. The shooting was beautiful and I very much look forward to the day [when we can all see it]
