[Interview] JYJ Kim Junsu “Strange and Thankful that Berlin Fans Recognized Me Much”
Member Kim Junsu has relayed his thoughts relating to the solo concert in Europe from JYJ.
Kim Junsu relayed through a phone call on YTN TV Newswide that took place on the afternoon of the th live, a day before the concert in Berlin Germany: “Because we have already held a concert once in Barcelona, our nervous tension and fluttering hearts are continuing.”
Continuing, to the question of “do you feel your popularity at the location” he revealed: “I was not able to tour a lot but I did walk the streets a little. There were our posters hanging and more people than I assumed recognized me and so it was strange and I felt great. As much as so I felt that I should try harder so that we can show my best sides to them.”
Further he added: “Spain is a passionate country and as much as so the response was passionate. Rather that we tried our best, I feel that the fans drew our more power than we had inside of us.”
He also said: “After the tour I feel that I will have a short rest period.”
Continuing, he said: “But it is a rest period in words only—in truth it is a process of preparing for next year. Doing the European Tour I was not able to write many songs. For the next step I will proceed with working on songs and each member will proceed with his individual activities.” Kim Junsu has been cast as Death for the musical Elisabeth due to open next February.
Further to the question of “did you speak to the other members on the popularity from Europe” he smiled, and said: “It was an opportunity to be exposed to a new culture and to do explore new paths and so it was great. I also feel that just staying in Asia may have been not good. I have now found a desire to make it. It was a stimulation that allowed even more numerous sides of me to show through JYJ and an opportunity to grow.”

On the other hand, JYJ had a solo concert on the 29th in Palau Sant Jordi stadium of Barcelona. JYJ will hold a concert in the Tempodrom of Berlin on the coming 6th.

A. First, I was amazed that a lot of European fans recognized us when we were walking around. I think the response was so enthusiastic because Spain is the country of passion. We thought, the fans drew out something more than we got, not really because we worked hard.

Q. It was reported that you recieved favorable responses from the local press. Why do you think the Europeans like Kpop?
A. I think it’s probably because the Korean singers’ music improved so much and the music is so nice. A singer is defined by music, and I think there is a good response because the music is great. [NEWS] 111031 JYJ European Tour, “We want to go forward with the heart that wants to start again”
This time it’s the European Tour . In the meantime, group JYJ (Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, Kim Junsu), who held the opening salvos of their successful World Tour in Thailand, Taiwan, Beijing, LA, New Jersey, and Canada has opened their hot show in Europe – in Spain, and after that, Germany.
Spain is their European Tour’s first stage. Prior to the performance, JYJ held a press conference at Poble Espanyol, Barcelona, Spain on the 28th of October, 2:00PM.
JYJ, who were dressed in black suits, appeared at the press conference with a decent look. Compared to when we met them in Korea, they greeted people with a more cheerful voice and a happier face. “Hello. We’re JYJ.”
“When we were in the U.S, we made friends with some Spanish people. To be able to perform in their country, personally, I think this is something very miraculous. Now that we have arrived in Spain, I realized that there were so few Asians here. Seeing this much people at the press conference after a long time, I feel so good (laugh). I would like us to share a lot of fun performing and talking.” (Yoochun)
“It’s exciting and a little worrying to perform in Spain, a county that I don’t know much about other than the fact that this is a country of good soccer players. But I’m really happy and thankful that we can perform here. We will make the best use of our know-how in performing abroad to create a stage where we can be the one with the audience (T/N: literally, where we can breathe together with the audience.)” (Junsu)

In reply to the question of how do they actually feel about their popularity after arriving in Spain, Kim Junsu, with his eyes becoming round, enhanced his voice, “We were really surprised”.
“Many people recognized me. This is an unfamiliar country that I only know as a famous country of football. I was really surprised that all tickets were sold out. After arriving in Barcelona, I went for a walk on the streets, pretty much people recognized me.” To Junsu who said this, Yoochun played a practical joke, “Are you sure you weren’t delusional?”
Giving no attention to that, Junsu smiled and said, “People from other countries of Europe showed JYJ’s album and even asked for signature. It was so amazing. I was even wearing a hat. I was really surprised yet thankful. I think my wish to successfully finish concerts in Spain and Germany has grown bigger.”
JYJ’s Spain concert wasn’t a concert planned by an Entertainment Company with participation of a large number of idol groups. It has greater meaning because it was the first solo concert of a Korean artist.
“Amid the growth of K-pop’s popularity in Europe, this is the first solo concert of a Korean singer. It’s surely meaningful. I think you can see that it’s a little different with a concert of a large company. I want it to become a K-pop concert that can show flavored performances to the point where JYJ’s songs fit Europe and variable genres can be digested by just one group.” (Junsu)
“I think the popularity of K-pop in Europe is the result of booming interest from people who have a mania for a singer. People who come to JYJ’s Spain concert this time are also fans who have that mania, I believe. I think that, even though it isn’t in Spanish or English, there are still many people who are waiting for a Korean stage, so I don’t feel much pressure.” (Jaejoong)
Among many countries of Europe, Spain and Germany were selected as first stage of the tour. Here is the reason: In the situation where you can’t estimate your impact in European market, there is no way you can plan a tour in many countries. Also, considering the location, it must be somewhere fans in Western and Eastern Europe can gather easily.
“Talk about ambition, we ardently want to show our diverse images in many other places. But we want to make the Spain concert a stepping stone. Even though it’s not large-scale like Asian concerts, I think it suggests a direction for JYJ to go to other places.” (Yoochun)
“In Korea or in Japan, we have started from small things; we have raised our skill from there. So I think it’s pretty obvious that our first concert in Europe is in small scale. Comparing to a large-scale concert, we want to insist more on the meaning of Europe concert. Rather than a larger venue with empty stage, we want to fill small places first, one by one. For local fans from a country of passion, Spain, JYJ has prepared a special stage. Directed by a local choreographer, mentor of a renowned dance program, Rafa Mendez, a passionate performance with local dancers, acrobatic choreography, etc. were added to the show’s opening.
Working with JYJ, Rafa Mendez praised, “They’re professional. Ever since the first rehearsal in the practice room, they have shown good manners and I could feel the professionalism from their actions. K-pop is very popular in Spain. After meeting these friends, I got to know why it was that popular. I was amazed by their vigorous dancing skills and their perfect live skills. It’s sure that they can achieve success across Europe.”
JYJ who visited Spain for the first time in their life, “We couldn’t try any Spanish food yet.” JYJ sang the blues when they were asked what they want to do the most in Spain.
“In Junsu’s case, since he has many interests in football, he has always wanted to watch FC Barcelona’s match. But even though he has tried to book a ticket from months ago, it was hard to get one.” (Jaejoong)

[News] 111031 JYJ discusses their Europe tour + their wish for recognition in Korea
On October 29th, JYJ became the first Korean artist to hold their own concert in Spain. 3,000 fans from all over Europe made the journey to Barcelona to cheer on their beloved idols and take part in a dream coming true.
JYJ held a press conference with both the Korean and Spanish press, answering questions about their limited appearances in Korea as well as their hopes for their European tour.
Reporters asked, “Although you’re promoting in various parts of Asia, the Americas, and Europe, even in places where Korean singers aren’t well known, it seems that we have the hardest time seeing you perform in Korea. Do you have any wishes about being able to promote without restrictions?”
Yoochun replied, “To be honest, I don’t think broadcast appearances are something we should think about… If I had a wish, it would be to be treated fairly. Although I know we can’t do anything about the fact that we’re missing from charts and such… From one perspective, those things are the results and repayment for our Korean fans who buy and listen to our album, so for those results to be missing – it’s upsetting. I wish things like our album sales and other numerical figures that represent the amount of love we’re receiving from the public could be recognized.”
The members also discussed the reasons they chose Spain and Germany as locations for their first Europe tour.
Junsu stated, “Although it’d be nice if we could tour all of Europe, we aren’t able to do that yet… We started receiving love calls from various European cities since last year, but we weren’t sure how far our influence had reached, so rather than coming up with irrational figures, we decided to pick countries that would be easy for fans to gather at… The best locations were Spain for Western Europe, and Germany for North and Eastern Europe. If a second Europe tour is possible, we’d like to perform in more countries.”
When asked whether they had anything special planned for the concert in Spain the next day, Jaejoong replied, “We’ve worked on some passionate performances and acrobatics with a famous local choreographer, Rafa Mendez.” Jaejoong also added that they plan to show themselves as who they are, rather than putting on a different front just for the Europe venture.
He stated, “This Barcelona concert will have about 3,000 audience members. Although it’s small, we think that the majority of the audience will be of JYJ mania fans. Instead of seeing something that got reinterpreted to fit Spain or Europe, I think that they may want something more authentic and ‘Korean’. That’s why even though this is our first European concert, we don’t feel a pressure that’s any different from the usual.”
Junsu agreed, “The order of performance also hasn’t been changed too much from the earlier tour in the Americas… We are coming as K-Pop and Hallyu singers, so I think that there will be a lot of fans who want to see our way of holding concerts. We didn’t try to make a special change. We will try to show ourselves as we are.”
In addition to their concert in Spain, the members were also invited to perform at the Spain Manga Festival. The boys will now move on to Berlin, Germany, for their concert on November 6th.

JYJ’s European Tour is receiving an explosive interest from K-pop fans of the location.
Among the 5000 seats for JYJ’s solo concert to be held in Poble Espanyol of Spain’s Barcelona on the coming 29th, 80% was sold in 3 days and surprised the affiliates of the location. Further, for the concert to be held in Berlin, Germany in November, the server of the ticket website was downed as soon as it was opened due to the flooding of the web traffic.
An affiliate of the concert revealed his impressions; “This is not a concert planned by a mega entertainment company but rather a solo concert, and so this situation is even more surprising. I again felt the popularity of K-pop in Europe and the high anticipation for JYJ.”

On top of this, to hear that the ticket sales are going well like this, we are overwhelmed with the excitement over the concert that will be held with the European fans.”
Further, JYJ was invited to a manga festival in Spain that gathers 60,000 people every year.
On the stage of this festival, JYJ plans to hold an occasion that gifts to the public of western Europe and the press of the location the attractiveness unique to JYJ.
This is not all. JYJ’s Get Out took #1 in the weekly chart for radio in Peru of South America with 3701 votes. At this, JYJ revealed their hopes: “After the release of the world wide album and the world tour, from cities all over the world love calls for JYJ are pouring in. From now on also, we plan to keep push ahead with the world tours which enable us to meet with fans from all over the world.”
JYJ’s domestic popularity is heated as well.
According to Ole Music’s announcement, JYJ conquered the chart for the 4th week and proved its popularity. This achievement is a record that was created in a situation that was different from other artists in their lack of appearing on TV, and so is even more meaningful. JYJ’s affiliates expressed their disappointment: “There has not once been an occasion in which JYJ was asked to appear. Even if we go visit them with an album there is no news. In particular, it is difficult to accept the fact that we are not even included on the charts of music programs when we are creating a storm on Hanteo Chart. Since the music programs on each of the broadcast stations cannot cite a valid reason for refusing to ask/let JYJ appear, it seems that now they are simply ignoring.”
On the other hand, JYJ will hold a large-scale concert in which 60,000 will attend in Japan’s Hitachi Beach Park in Irabaki Hyun on the 15th and 16th.

JYJ is already making headlines for their success in Europe and it was revealed that the trio’s upcoming concert in Barcelona, Spain sold out 80% of its tickets within three days which surprises the parties involved in the concert organisation, according to dkpopnews website.
There was even a case where the ticket site’s server for the Berlin concert crashed due to an overwhelming amount of people trying to purchase tickets at the same time.
A source stated that the situation is even more surprising because this is just an individual concert rather than a concert held by a major entertainment company.
JYJ stated, “This is our first Europe tour, so initially, we were a little afraid. We thank you for your high level of interest and we will prepare a spectacular performance.”
They continued, “Not too long ago, the Spanish ambassador for Korea thanked us for the concert in Spain and encouraged us; now we’re hearing that our ticket sales are going well too. We’re so excited for the concerts with our European fans.”

“Rafa Mendez, the famous choreographer popular for his participation in the various versions of “Fama, a bailar”, will be responsible for directing the choreography and stage set-up of the upcoming tour of the South Korean band JYJ.
Rafa Mendez has a long history behind him in which he has collaborated with major people in the industry such as Luca Tomassini, the choreographer of Madonna and Kylie Minogue, or Kim Gaven, who was responsible for the performances of the group Take That. As a dancer, he has assisted artists as well known as Atomic Kitten, Geri Halliwel or Tiziano Ferro. He also recorded Paris Hilton’s latest MV.
Next Thursday on October 6, auditions will be held to pick the backup dancers that will accompany the group in the concerts in Barcelona and Berlin.
JYJ, who have sold more than half a million records in Asia, will land (come to) our country to present their latest album “In Heaven”. The group has chosen the city of Barcelona to hold their first concert in Spain, initiating their tour through the continent. This act will take place in the symbolic surroundings of Poble Espanyol, on Saturday, October 29.
Berlin will be the other European destination for JYJ, who will arrive at the German capital to perform in the Tempodrom Stadium on November 6. European fans will finally have a chance to see their favorite artists live.
