The encounter between the premodern and the modern, ‘Rooftop Prince’

Why in the world does the Crown Prince of Chosun fall into the rooftop? ‘Rooftop Prince’ is a drama which utilizes so called ‘timeslip’ through leaping the time as its genre device. While Lee Gak, the Crown Prince of Chosun (Park Yuchun) and his retainers were chased by the assassins, they suddenly leaped the time and fell into the rooftop where Park Ha (Han Jimin) was living. Since someone who lived in the past, particularly as the Crown Prince came to the present, his every move within an unfamiliar environment must become a comedy. His way of talking is so absurd and the behaviors of his loyal retainers are overly exaggerated. Their experiences of modern Seoul per se are linked to the humor such as ‘what this is for.’
At its early stage, it has been called as the drama funnier than ‘Gag Concert.’ Then, a more complicatedly entangled melodrama started. Lee Gak has a feeling on Park Ha which has evolved before he is aware. At the same time, he is trying to get Hong Sena (Jung Yumi)’s heart because he believes his Crown Princess was reincarnated in her. The fact that Hong Sena is Yong Taemu (Lee Taesung)’s lover, who can do everything to achieve his goals makes this four-cornered relationship more complex, however, the framework of this drama on who will be connected to whom in the future is not uncertain. This drama clearly identifies Lee Gak and Park Ha as virtue, on the other hand, Sena and Yong Taemu as evil. If a happy ending will be pursued (it is difficult to have a tragic story line in the genre of comedy), it can be unquestionably seen that Lee Gak and Park Ha eventually open their hearts each other.
In appearance, this drama seems to be nothing more or nothing less than a romantic comedy due to comic features and definite melo lines. However, if we uncover a layer of   such appearance, we can find an interesting point inside. This again comes back to the question why the Crown Prince of Chosun fell into the rooftop. This drama shows that the premodern state of Chosun turns into a comedy per se when it encounters the modern society. It grasped a premodern master-servant relationship as a comedy via showing such features as shouting “his highness” in the street and persisting that they rather have their head cut than their long hair. Therefore, this kind of comedy per se satirizes the premodern   relationship (Is this only the state of Chosun period. In modern world, there is also a hierarchy generated by money) and accommodates the intention to overcome it.
If so, how is the modern world which surpassed the premodern period and became rational and cool like. The state of the modern world where Park Ha is living has its own absurdity as well. Owing to the rationality brought by modernization surpassing the premoderniny, individuals who had subordinated to their groups and status could obtain freedom via money. But, this also made people willing to sacrifice. That is, after money functioned as a medium, good values such as intimate relationships between people have disappeared. Yong Taemu and Hong Sena are such characters who genuinely represent the harmful effects brought by the modern rationality. They make their friends die for their desire and even turn their face away from their family who are in danger.
The reason why the Crown Prince fell into the rooftop derived from the intention to simultaneously view the values of the premodern and modern periods. Indeed, premodern values do not have to be necessarily discarded while modern values are not always better. The important point is to keep good values and to get rid of bad values regardless of premodern or modern periods. In this sense, Lee Gak, the Crown Prince who fell into the rooftop is a character who is standing in a very delicate position. He gradually comes to understand the irrationality of a premodern master-servant relationship through experiencing commoners’ lives and, on the other hand, pathetically looks at contemporary people who are absorbed in money.
‘Rooftop Prince’, therefore, is not a kind of drama dreaming of the revolution in which the present drives out the past. It is just a drama in which the present and past meet and reconcile each other. Then, all the bad things will be pushed away and all the good things will be embraced. Of course, this drama is using timeslip as its genre device. Nevertheless the reason why such comedy-like drama make viewers laugh, cry, and sometimes warm their hearts can be found in the above facts. The point in which the Crown Prince fell into the rooftop and has experienced and viewed the modern commoners’ lives and desires, that is the point where the premodern and the modern meet provides a unique interest to the viewers. Moreover, we need to think about the fact that it is also very significant.

I have been hearing some other dramas’ fans saying that our drama is silly and meaningless. It is just that they have not watched it yet to give any judgement. Rooftop Prince deserves more than just a title romantic comedy.

[NEWS] 120416 JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun and the cast of Rooftop Prince burst out laughing, spreading the “happy virus”

Recently, a video clip in which JYJ’s Park Yoo Chun, Han Ji Min, Jung Yoo Mi, Lee Tae Sung, and the three servants (Lee Min Ho, Choi Woo Shik, Jung Suk Won) of SBS’s drama series Rooftop Prince (written by Lee Hee Myung, directed by Shin Yoon Seob) appear with a bright smile on their face.

On April 13, a posting titled “Keep smiling with Rooftop Prince!” was uploaded on the official website of the series.
The clip shows the cast burst out laughing while shooting. Their smiles, facial expressions, and actions sport such an innocent, lively image and spread out a “happy virus” among the viewers.
Netizens who saw the video reacted: “Seeing all of them smiling makes me feel happy too.” “They have a great atmosphere on the set.” “I smile because of you guys.” “They make me smile throughout the clip. They are such lovely actors.” “Can’t wait to see Rooftop Prince again!”
The upcoming episode draws more attention as Park Ha (played by Han Ji Min) is hired by the company where Sena (played by Jung Yoo Mi) works, giving a foresight to their growing conflict.

[NEWS] 120413 ‘The King 2Hearts’ Under Attack for Assumed Reference to Park Yoo Chun and Stalker Fans

Lee Seung Gi has suddenly come under fire on suspicions that he’s dissed Park Yoo Chun in his drama.
After netizens pointed out that a line of dialogue from the April 12 broadcast of MBC’s The King 2Hearts seemed like it was aiming a blow at SBS’ Rooftop Prince, fans of both dramas have been pitched into a battle regarding the line’s original intent.
Photobucket
The dialogue appeared in the scene where Hang Ah (Ha Ji Won) dances to Bo Peep Bo Peep to make the sad Jae Ha (Lee Seung Gi) laugh.
Hang Ah put on cute bear paws to dance out her cute dance, but Jae Ha only started scolding her, saying, “Are you going to hit your stalker fans with those?”
The line, however, seemed to refer to JYJ, Park Yoo Chun’s group, which was involved in an incident in which the members had been accused of using violence against their stalker fans.
The viewer boards of Rooftop Prince were swamped with posts about Lee Seung Gi’s line in The King 2Hearts, asking after the intent of the sudden reference to stalker fans.
Lee Seung Gi’s line probably wasn’t trying to be a direct hit at Park Yoo Chun and Rooftop Prince, but the fans were thoroughly ruffled anyway.
Before the Lee Seung Gi controversy, Lee Si Young started one of her own when she left a post on a DC Inside drama gallery (forum) that said ‘Rooftop Prince will catch up to The King 2Hearts’ and that she’ll ‘bet [her] wrists on it’.
She won’t be having her wrists taken away from her anytime soon because Rooftop Prince recently sprinted past The King 2Hearts, but The King 2Hearts fans have started coming up with movements to watch the drama on time for more viewership ratings, saying they won’t be leaving Lee Si Young’s wrists alone.
The battle between The King 2Hearts and Rooftop Prince is that fierce, and it’s getting more heated by the minute.
The King 2Hearts aired two episodes in a row on April 12, but its viewership ratings have been showing a definite downward trend, falling past those of Rooftop Prince. The King 2Hearts scored 11 percent and 12.5 percent in viewership ratings (AGB Nielsen Media Research) for an average of 11.75 percent on that day. Rooftop Prince, however, is on the rise with 12.5 percent, and KBS2’s The Equator Man is following suit with 10.8 percent.

[NEWS] 120413 Is the Yellow Butterfly the Answer to ′Rooftop Prince′ Riddle?

The reappearance of the riddle – ‘What dies when it’s alive and is alive even when it dies?’ – has piqued the curiosity of the Rooftop Prince viewers.
In the April 12 broadcast of SBS’ Rooftop Prince, crown prince Lee Gak (Park Yoo Chun) became aware of the possible connection between Park Ha and Bu Yong (Lee Gak’s sister-in-law from his previous life in Joseon).
Photobucket
During the episode, the audience witnessed Lee Gak and Park Ha’s impromptu trip to Chuncheon with just a childhood picture as their guide.

Although they found the elementary school that Park attended as a child thanks to the help of a photo studio, Park Ha’s name was nowhere to be found in the school registry. They later found out that Park Ha’s childhood name was Park In Joo from President Jang, Park Ha’s biological mother.
Turning towards a sullen Park Ha, Lee Gak asked, “Is that your real name? How do you write your name in Chinese characters?” After learning of her Chinese character name, Lee Gak explained, “Your name signifies a lotus and a lotus is also known as ‘Bu Yong,’” recalling his sister-in-law from his previous life.
Then, Lee Gak asked Park Ha the same riddle he had asked Bu Yong many years ago. However, unlike Bu Yong who had answered correctly, Park Ha said, “Life, because living is not really living. We are all in a vegetative state.”
After the broadcast, viewers tried to play the role of ‘Rooftop Prince CSI experts’ and took a stab at solving the riddle.
One viewer said, “The answer [to the riddle] is Bu Yong. Not only is Han Ji Min’s name Bu Yong, the (Bu Yong) lotus blooms in the morning and withers at night.”
Another viewer said, “The correct answer is a butterfly. A caterpillar hardens into chrysalis and turns into a butterfly. The caterpillar lives a busy life but his transformation into a butterfly signifies that it dies when it is still live and is alive even when it dies.”
Previously on the drama, the yellow butterfly that was woven into Bu Yong’s veil was brought to life with Lee Gak’s tears and 300 years later, the same yellow butterfly linked Lee Gak with Yong Tae Yong in America. As such, the butterfly appears to be the answer to Lee Gak’s riddle.
Viewers are wondering when Lee Gak will finally discover Bu Yong’s reincarnation as Park Ha and how he will solve the secret of the yellow butterfly.

[NEWS] 120413 Micky Yoochun Becomes a True Actor via Rooftop Prince

The acting potential of JYJ member Park Yoochun breaks out. The acting performance of Park Yoochun who is starring in SBS drama series Rooftop Prince has been praised by audience continuously. Park Yoochun is playing the role of Lee Gak, who is the crown prince of Joseon Dynasty 300 years ago. Lee Gak uses ancient tone and voice and modern tone to speak at different occasions, which is very interesting.
In front of Park Ha and 3 confidants whom he get along with easily, he uses a majestic tone of crown prince, but in front of other people, because of he has to live with the identity of Yong Tae Yong of modern times, he has to abandon ‘the tone of the king’ and speak ‘Seoul language,’ which is very funny, similar to the plot of countryman strives to speak Seoul language in Gag Concert. Not only in the tone, the comedy acting of Park Yoochun is also surprising, who perfect performed the ‘crown prince from Joseon Dynasty.’
Unknowing that he has come to modern times, he goes to Donhwamun Gate of Changdeokgung palace to shout, “Quickly open the door,” and is chased away by the police, he gobbles when tasting the omelet rice for the first time at the home of Park Ha (Han Ji Min), and sucks in the Yakult in one breath as he likes the sweet food, all these scenes have constantly stimulating the audience who burst into laughing. However, Park Yoohun also demonstrates the romantic love acting skills, increasing the tension of the drama.
After seeing the reincarnation of crown princess, Se Na (Jung Yoo Mi), he makes effort to make her to become his woman again. He buys the bracelet preferred by Park Ha to give to Se Na as surprise gift and other ‘Joseon version of proposing’ is shaking the heart of Se Na.
In addition, in order to retain Park Ha who is preparing to go to United States, he buys the painting of tropical beach for Park Ha who loves tropical beach and coconut trees. He stops the bus to airport, and tells Park Ha in the bus, “Now there is tropical bus, it’s unnecessary to go to such faraway place,” and pulls the hand of Park Ha to alight from the bus. These courageous scenes have been portrayed perfectly.
Through Rooftop Prince, Park Yoochun’s acting has been getting a lot of love and praises at the same time. Park Yoochun who has accumulated internal strength of acting skills through the dramas ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ and ‘Miss Ripley’ displays the higher level of acting skills, attracting the attention of audience. He who the acting been re-appraised through Rooftop Prince is impressive.

[NEWS] Rooftop Prince Stands Out Among Korean Dramas that Well Praised with Low Ratings

The focus on Korean dramas by three major TV broadcasters has almost concentrating on Wednesday and Thursday drama series on second quarter of 2012. On the contrary, the Monday and Tuesday drama series has not received much attention. For example, the Love Rain starring Jang Geun Suk and Girls’ Generation member Yoona and directed by famous director of Winter Sonata, and Fashion King starring Yoo Ah In and Shin Se Kyung have much more cheers and applause than audience ratings.
The first 4 episodes of Love Rain uses the 1970s retro style, every landscape, even scene is like a painting, reminiscent of beautiful mountain and crystal-clear water, all dullness, in fact the plot is boring too. In Fashion King, many people feels that Yoo Ah In looks better when starring in historical drama.
As for the Wednesday and Thursday drama, MBC’s The King 2 Hearts starring Ha Ji Won and Lee Seung Gi which succeeded The Moon that Embraces the Sun, SBS’s Rooftop Prince starring JYJ member Micky Yoochun and Han Ji Min, and KBS2′s Man From the Equator starring Uhm Tae Woong, Lee Joon Hyuk and Lee Bo Young debuted at the same time. After the end of 1st episode, audience seems to prefer Rooftop Prince more than The King 2 Hearts, while the plot of Man From the Equator which is giving a sense of heaviness does not attract willingness to continue watching the drama. When viewership rating was announced, The King 2 Hearts ranked top, Ha Ji Won is really ever victorious in miniseries.
Photobucket
Even though The King 2 Hearts recorded the better audience ratings, but audience still think that Rooftop Prince is a better drama. Although it has the theme of time traveling, but it’s relaxing, hilarious and has element of reasoning and thrilling. The crown prince in Joseon Dynasty unexpectedly promotes outstanding talents among the people to official position to investigate the cause of death of the concubine, but the group of four is been hunted down in the forest, and the crown prince and his subjects are then broke into the modern times.
The crown prince who came to the modern world cannot imagine that he has to buy a ticket to go into the palace he is living in, and even has difficulty in drinking water in bottle. Apartment from his three officials who came along with him, nobody equals him as the crown prince from Joseon Dynasty, and most regards him as insane. The PD of the drama ingenuously designs the plot of difficulties in adapting to modern life to be funny. Coupled with funny comic in the drama or at the end of the drama, supplementing with hints foreshadowing future development that are everywhere, the viewers unknowingly try to reason.
The ancient crown prince came to the modern world, replacing his reincarnation. Next, how would PD lead the story? With just a butterfly that gone missing in ancient world, but re-appears in modern world, have made people began to speculate that crown princess who died in previous life may not be the true concubine, but the sister of the concubine, and etc. The reincarnated crown prince has really dead? Will crown prince return to the future to save the younger sister of the concubine from being killed? And more.
In The King 2 Hearts, Ha Ji Won wears a North Korean military uniform to fall in love with South Korean prince Lee Seung Gi. The acting of Ha Ji Won is second to none, and the performance of Lee Seung Gi is also better than his performance in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. The story also has its relaxed and funny side. But for unknown reason, many viewers are disconnected with the drama. But the viewership ratings of The King 2 Hearts are champion among all 3 Wednesday and Thursday drama. Although Man From the Equator ranks last, the its ratings are slowing climbing.
But The King 2 Hearts’ ratings are showing gradually declining trend, falling by each episode. Rooftop Prince which was in hot pursuit even managed to overtake The King 2 Hearts in episode 6. Exactly which drama will become the ultimate winner? Nobody knows until the end.
Even though the competition among Korean dramas is so intense, but every dramas are currently still following the direction of established script step by step. Temporarily there is no series that plans to change the script to add in absurd plot because of viewership ratings. Even though the dramas may be criticized, but it also has strength, and market.

[Omitted]
1) Oh, who is this? It’s the Crown Prince! When I came to the standby room, I saw that my brother has arrived. Although we live together, we hardly see each other since we’ve been so busy. Roof Top Prince was shooting its scenes at Incheon so they came to our filming site. The day he came, Roof Top Prince has just won the first place in its ratings so his smile was so big that his lips almost pulled all the way up to his ears.
2) ‘Park Family’, our staffs. My brother’s staffs and mine overlap. Having been with them for more than a year, they often stay at our house if the filming ends late at night. It’s like a sports team, ha.

[NEWS] 3 Reasons that Explain Popularity of Yuchun’s Rooftop Prince

SBS Wednesday and Thursday drama series Rooftop Prince won the victory of becoming the champion of top ratings among dramas broadcasting at the same time slot. From the nearly 7% gap with the first ranking drama in episode 1, to overtaking in episode 6, the reversal happens in such a short time frame.
Not only in viewership ratings, Rooftop Prince also achieves overwhelming victory in competition for discussion topics. The acting of JYJ’s Park Yuchun, Han Ji Min and other actors continue to receive praises, and other actors have also shown interest in the drama.
The ‘whipped cream’ was sold out just because it was shown in the drama. As such, the sponsors of the drama are very happy. The shredded chicken noodle endorsed by Park Yoochun and NII sponsored clothing wore by Ha Ji Min in the drama have seen rising sales figure when the TV series began its airing. Furthermore, other companies such as cafe and take-away eateries have shown interest in sponsoring the drama.
Photobucket
What’s the secret for the popularity of Rooftop Prince which able to stir the heated discussion? There are 3 reasons for it.
Firstly, the drama has high level of perfection. The screenplay writer Lee Hee Myung is a highly anticipated scriptwriter who is known as great in producing romantic series. Audience has exclaimed over the content written by him that does not have plot dragging incident. Netizens said, “The IQ of screenplay writer is higher than us combined,” and are engaging in heated discussion just like scientific research on the hint foreshadowing future plot left by the writer.
Secondly, it’s the result of meticulous actors. During the broadcast of episode 3, netizens were surprised on the fine acting by the actors. Crown prince (Park Yoochun) met Se Na (Jung Yoo Mi) who looks exactly the same with crown princess, but the ending scene when the crown prince been pulled away by the guard, is overlapped with the scene of crown princess who screamed under such situation, and the actor who pulled the crown prince in the past and present is the same person. The filming of the two scenes separated by almost a month, but used the same character, showing the attention to details in acting. The perfect acting of Yoochun in the final scene of episode 3 surprised viewers, the ability to perform was shocking.
Lastly, is the passionate performance by the actors. Both Park Yoochun and Han Ji Min play two roles by a single person in different time and place, although it’s not easy, but they manage to perform perfectly the funniness, sadness and love in the drama. Lee Tae Sung and Jung Yoo Mi also won praise for the acting that pushed the tension to a climax. Furthermore, the comical acting by three court officials traveled from Joseon Dynasty, Song Man Bo (Lee Min Ho), Do Chi San (Choi Woo Sik), and Woo Yong Sul (Jung Suk Won), produced the drama in perfection. On the shooting scene, even if the filming schedule is tight, but actors who face the filming with cheerful smile are getting closer and closer.

Titled “Rooftop’s Fashion King,” the video went viral in Korea, humoring fans. Similar to “Rooftop Prince’s” plot, Park Yoo Chun and his entourage travel 300 years into the future and ends up at Yoo Ah In’s attic room. [HUMOR] 120409 The untold love story: Rooftop Fashion King

javabeans: New mashup! It’s Rooftop Prince meets Fashion King in… wait for it…Rooftop Fashion King.
girlfriday: Hahaha. So perfect. Is it the long-awaited sequel to Sungkyunkwan Scandal? I always knew those crazy kids were meant to be.
javabeans: So when they were fighting over sleeping positions, they really WERE just trying to get close to each other?
girlfriday: Yeah, they were like, what’s this girly other guy doing here? We were good just the two of us!
javabeans: It’s the age-old story of two kiddos from the opposite side of the tracks, one Noron, the other Soron…
girlfriday: Bickering hate turns into love…
javabeans: And transcends time, apparently. So in Rooftop Fashion King, old-timey Yoochun arrives in these suspicious new times…

girlfriday: Did he follow Ah-in to the future? Because he couldn’t live without his friend?
javabeans: I believe Yoochun accuses Ah-in of using his wicked sorcery to warp him into the present, and insists he set things to rights. Ah-in’s all, Whatever, dude, get away… until we see the flashback to when Ah-in was in Joseon times with him.
girlfriday: It’s kinda amusing that they’re the same personalities from the other drama, in their new ones. Ah-in is as surly as ever and Yoochun is still a haughty stick-in-the-mud.
javabeans: That’s what makes the mashup (which was done by the same person who did the awesome Hunter over Flowers) so great. It totally works, on all fronts — Rooftop, Fashion King, AND Sungkyunkwan. So now you have Yoochun running around Seoul trying to get Ah-in to reverse his spell, and they keep bickering back and forth all the time, which you know is just a prelude to the love part.
girlfriday: I love that there’s actually a fashion show sequence in both shows that fits perfectly.
javabeans: And the omurice feeding! How Ah-in kicks him out, then feels bad and feeds him. I love how Yoochun watches Ah-in eating and comments how pretty he looks eating. How appropriate that it’s Yoochun who breaks the gender taboo in both dramas, being up-front about his feelings…
girlfriday: And the look on his face when he sees him get into bed shirtless? Followed by the declaration that he’s going to live there now. Hee.
javabeans: Cheeky punk. Then Yoochun sees Ah-in being manhandled by that punk Lee Je-hoon, and gets all hot ‘n bothered.
girlfriday: All, that’s MY bickering-hate-manlove! Step away! This is like an entire 16-episode drama on speed. Yoochun finally melts Ah-in’s cold heart…
javabeans: And they live happily ever after? Or at least until they come out with Antique Miss Ripley Who Can’t Marry?
girlfriday: That one sounds less pleasant. I think I’ll stick to more episodes of Rooftop Fashion King.
javabeans: I’ll take its racier cousin, Rooftop Scandal.
girlfriday: Rawr! For that, we need Joong-ki.
javabeans: Well, he’s got the fashion design creds now. He can be the creative diva they fight over.
girlfriday: Or they could cut in his Tree With Deep Roots footage, to have two royals fighting for the throne.
javabeans: LOL: “You will be king! Toughen up!” “But I want to do what I want to do!… design hanboks!”
girlfriday: Cut to future, where Yoochun discovers that the real reason Ah-in came to the present was to make it so that Joong-ki could follow his dreams. Love triangle!
javabeans: Heartbreak! Well, I guess the prince can’t beat the two kings.
girlfriday: Two? Oh Joseon and Fashion? Aw, poor princey. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

For those of you who have been following SBS “Rooftop Prince,” Lee Gak (Park Yoo Chun) convinced his doppelganger’s grandmother to buy Park Ha’s (Han Ji Min) rooftop home. During the sixth episode, the rooftop home was under construction, but photos of the new interior have been released wowing fans. Titled “Rooftop Prince’s New Rooftop Abode,” the photos were uploaded to several online communities.

The photos gave viewers a slight peek into the new and improved home. Now a two-story villa, it’s impossible to remember what the humble home used to look like.
Netizens commented, “I want to live in that rooftop home,” “Haha, the home below it might collapse now that the rooftop room is so heavy,” “Park Ha will be so happy,” and more.
Meanwhile, “Rooftop Prince” recorded 12.5% (AGB Nielsen) for its sixth episode, taking the lead in the Wed/Thurs race for the ratings.
