[NEWS] 120311 Korean Fever: Who is JYJ And What Is The Reason For All The Fascination?

Learn more about the Asian group that has caused great sensation in Lima and who will perform today at the Explanada Del Estadio Monumental.

The members of Korean group JYJ sparked great hysteria to thousands of Peruvian fans. First the fans wiped out all the tickets for the show that the three Asian will offer this March 11 in Lima. Then, hundreds of followers waited at the airport to greet them and after camped out in front of the Marriot Hotel to watch over them. Mass hysteria was sparked, orchestrated with shouts, cries and  cheers. The devotion seemed much greater than that held for idols such as Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers. However, a question that crosses the mind of those who have not been infected with this fever is: Who are they and why are they so revered? Here are some highlights regarding the fascination towards Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu.

1. STELLER PAST

Although JYJ was created in 2010, the three members of the k-pop group already posessed great fame from being part of one of the most famous artistic groups, TVXQ, which was formed in 2003 and consisted of 5 members.  However, in 2009, charismatic Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, the Korean company that managed their careers, arguing that their contract of 13 years was unjust for them and should be invalidated. At the end of 2009, the court ruled in their favor. Together, they created JYJ, lunched the album “The Beginning” and took with them the thousands of fans that they had from all around the world.

2. WHAT IS ENJOYED OF THEIR MUSIC

JYJ opted in a smart marketing move: launching a full album which consisted of songs in English, which allowed them to be able to reach more markets. In addition, they also sang in Japanese and Korean. According to a fan of the group, what she most enjoys of them is their “feel good” lyrics in their songs. In addition the group has multiple ballads and pop songs. Also, they include dance and R&B songs. It is important to mention that the group’s first album counted on the collaboration of one of the greatest in the music industry, Kanye West, who helped with the production of the album, in addition to participating in their first single, “Ayy Girl.” Similar to the style of Backstreet Boys, these Koreans combine their songs with flashy choreography in addition to having the particular “look.”

3. MASCULINE CHARM

Hero Jaejoong has been considered for two consecutive years now as the most handsome man in all of Asia. In addition to being a singer, he is a famous actor and director. He has participated in several “doramas” (Asian Dramas). In 2011, he played for the first time the protagonist in a drama, “Protect the Boss.”

4. THE EXPANSION OF THE FAME

There still this one key question to answer, “How is it that the fame of JYJ has traveled to our beautiful land under the sun? Well, first of all, it is clear that in today’s society one cannot underestimate the power of the internet, however, the first contact that the Peruvian fans had with these types of groups was through dramas. The Asian dramas were transmitted by Panamericana Televisión and in which one can hear multiple songs by Asian groups.  It should be noted that many people had also followed these types of programs through the internet. According to one of the group’s followers, many would listen to the songs and like them, later looking up information of those that sang the songs, which lead to them to discover groups like JYJ and the rest is history known to all: sold out concerts, hundreds of fans camped outside of a hotel, shouting, devotion, fascination.

[TRANS] 111012 Newspaper Refuses to Carry Advertisement for JYJ Concert! The Opaque Reasons

The JYJ concert “2011 JYJ UNFORGETTABLE LIVE CONCERT IN JAPAN” will be held this weekend at the National Hitachi-kaihin Park in Hitashinaka, Ibaraki. But behind the scenes the activities of Junsu, Jaejoong, and Yoochun, the three who left Tohoshinki, were met with more trouble.

As a result of the break up and contract troubles, Changmin and Yunho have activities. Their management company Avex formerly managed the three members of JYJ and the three had concerts. However Avex unilaterally announced the suspension of the activities of JYJ in Japan citing JYJ’s Korean management company’s ties to the mafia.  JYJ protested this decision claiming that Avex knew about this when signing the contract. (T/N: This article misreports in that C-JeS never had mafia ties but its CEO, Mr. Baek, did have a prison record of which Avex was well aware from the very beginning.) The three resumed activities with the support of another company. However the two companies are still in dispute over the contract.

“A fan pleaded to the CEO of Avex, Masato Matsuura on twitter to stop obstructing JYJ’s activities. He replied ‘This is not obstruction. It’s a contractual problem. In other words a promise,’ revealing his intent to keep fighting. Avex requested sports newspapers and other media outlets to stop reporting on JYJ and as a result the name JYJ has practically disappeared from most media.” (Reporter for a sports newspaper)

Although it has been ignored for the most part by the media, both sides have been battling fiercely. There was a case when JYJ tried to hold a charity concert sponsored by the new company, but the arena canceled under pressure from Avex.

This time another incident has caused shock waves among fans.

“JYJ fans, worried that the media was ignoring JYJ, gathered donations to place an advertisement for JYJ’s concert in the Ibaraki Newspaper. The Ibaraki Newspaper was also positively considering publishing the advertisement. However, suddenly, just before submitting the manuscript, the fans received a call from the newspaper informing them that the advertisement had been canceled.” (Reporter for a weekly magazine)

The cancellation happened after the advertisement’s size, price, and wording had all been confirmed. The reason given was “JYJ is in the midst of a lawsuit” “Their concert has been canceled before”, and “The venue has received a call protesting against the concert” and as a result it was decided that the JYJ advertisement did not meet the newspaper’s requirements.

Enraged fans responded angrily “They knew about the lawsuit from the beginning” “Is this harassment from Avex?”

We asked people at the Ibaraki Newspaper about details of the cancellation of the advertisement.
“We have been sued in the past because of what we published, so the fact that they were in the midst of a lawsuit was the biggest problem for us. But although this decision was made after much discussion, personally I feel troubled by this cancellation. This was a very unique and good opportunity where ordinary people were supporting the artist but …”

The newspaper has denied that they were pressured by Avex. However the weekly magazine reporter points out that the result is that Avex wins.

“If the reason that the advertisement was cancelled was because of the lawsuit, that means that Avex’s negative campaign worked. The credibility of the artist is notably damaged and they are very limited in their activities just because they are in the midst of a legal dispute.”

How long will this situation of not being able to support JYJ even from the shadows continue? The fans who initiated the advertisement say that the money gathered for the advertisement will be pooled and used for another JYJ support project in the future. How will this fight end?

For nearly a year, JYJ has been banned from Korean TV stations, they expressed frankly that they feel sad about being prevented from performing in their own country.

According to South Korean media reports, the three former members of TVXQ, Jejung, Yuchun and Junsu, who have made a new start as JYJ. However, it has been rumoured that Lee Soo Man of SM(their former company) had obstructed their appearance on KBS, making KBS blacklist JYJ, citing that they are involved in a lawsuit as the excuse.

Furthermore, KBS assumed that the acronym PSM which is part of the lyrics of their new song, Pierrot refers to President SM, the boss of SM Lee Soo Man. They banned the song, saying that it was a personal attack on Lee.

“Please help us!”

It has been a year since JYJ released their first ENglish album, “The Beginning” but they still have not been able to make an appearance on any television music program in South Korea.

Recently they released their first Korean album “In Heaven” and the three members expressed their desire to appear on Korean television music shows.

JYJ said, “We want to go on the programs, please help us! Especially since we have released a Korean album which should be eligible for the music charts of the television music shows.”

“We are Koreans, therefore we wish to have promotional activities as singers in Korea. We have received a lot of support from other countries, yet we cannot promote freely in our own country, we feel very sad about this.”

We Just Want A Fair Chance To Perform On Stage

“Our fans have waited a long time for this album, we are very pleased that we were able to release it. Although we could be saying ‘It would be great if our song is first on the charts’, we do not want to say that, we only want a fair chance to stand on stage to perform. However, even up till now we have not been given such a chance, which causes us a lot of distress.”
